Fine jewelry: a new high-value product line

Mytheresa's first items above €10K, with no historical data to go on. I turned dozens of country-specific scenarios into one set of rules and launched in three months, in time for Christmas.

Role
Senior Product Manager
Timeline
3 months to launch
Team
Logistics, DHL, ERP and checkout teams
Scope
Items above €10K, special handling above €50K

The problem

High-value jewelry broke assumptions built into every step from checkout to shipping.

No historical data

Nothing above €10K had ever been sold, so there was no data to plan from.

Rules that differ by country

Customs, insurance and shipping rules changed from market to market.

Mixed orders

Orders combining jewelry with other products still had to work end to end.

What I did

Collected the requirements

I worked with logistics, DHL and the ERP team to gather every constraint by market and value.

Reduced dozens of scenarios to one page

I condensed them into a one-page spec by value tier, so leadership and engineering worked from the same picture.

Built the rules into ERP and checkout

With the ERP and checkout teams I defined customs value limits, automatic shipment splits for high-value items, and insurance in the order logic, designed to keep extra parcels to a minimum.

The call

  • Handle scenarios case by case

Flexible, but impossible to build or test reliably.

  • What we did

One rule set by value tier

Simple enough for leadership, precise enough for engineering.

Results

Live in three months, in time for the Christmas campaign.

What worked

  • A one-page spec by value tier gave leadership and engineering the same picture.
  • Designing the split logic to keep extra parcels to a minimum protected both cost and customer experience.

What didn't

  • With no historical data, demand couldn't be sized in advance.

What I'd do differently

I'd set up tracking for high-value orders from day one, so the first season builds the data the launch had to do without.
